ArtWanted.com | Online Portfolio Review

By heather at 11:09 pm on Thursday, March 22, 2007

I just uploaded a few pieces to ArtWanted.com, a online portfolio / print-on-demand site where you can post original artwork for sale and hopefully connect with a buyer. I’ve only had my work up there for a few days, but WOW have I had a lot of responses to my work… mainly comments to the work, no inquiries to purchasing the artwork. But a surprising number of responses, seems like a popular site.

My only negative comment on it is that they have the option to sell prints of your work through their site, but you have to pay to be a member. This to me seems like a drawback, as there are other reputable sites who offer POD (print-on-demand) prints of artwork with no upfront costs to you. I prefer sites that have no up-front fees for artists, because it doesn’t cost them anything UNLESS they print copies of your artwork… that’s the beauty of POD, there are no up front materials or overhead costs (aside from the server the files are stored on) and they happily take a huge royalty from each piece of YOUR artwork they sell. So there’s my rant. I like Lulu.com, CafePress.com, and Art.com better if you want to get into selling prints on the side.

My background is design and illustration for print advertising and publishing. I am a member of Artist Rising, a division of Art.com. The work I have included in my gallery is designer digital “PhotoArt”, a new medium for me. Three choices are given for membership categories, 2 of which require reasonable annual fees. I just found out that my gallery will not be posted on Art.com until maybe later this year — their cut-off date for this posting was the end of January, which I wasn’t told until I asked why I couldn’t find my name in their directory. So, I am among about 20,000 artists and if a potential buyer does not know my URL for my gallery, there is no marketing assistance from Art.com.in finding me by name or artwork. I do have some images on their Sistino web site, their worldwide network. For a novice who is not a web tech, I’m forced to do marketing the only way I know — direct mail from mailing lists. I thought this information would be useful to you.

I will try the other sites you so generously mentioned, in hopes of some marketing options. Thank you for your posting.

Hi Lucyna,
Thanks for your post on my blog!

I agree, for anyone who isn’t totally web savvy, then an online portfolio where you simply upload images is absolutely the best. Aside from my own website, I do pay for a Portfolios.com online portfolio which I am very happy with, which is probably why I’m a bit more picky about my expectations on this ArtWanted.com site.

The sites I mentioned are mainly good if you’re wanting to sell prints of your work, so hopefully they will be useful to you. You may also like Greeting Card Universe (GCU), they are new but I’ve already made some small royalties off selling greeting cards of my illustrations, perhaps you will find luck with your digital photography there.

Direct mail is one of my staple marketing efforts as well… I snail mail samples yearly to publishers and companies I wish to work with. You may find my previous post on promoting your illustration (or digital photography!) helpful.
Best of luck Lucyna!

www.artwanted.com has been slow in reacting to the new frontier of the net. They recently changed their website design, but I’m still cynical as to if it will matter or not. They are 9 years old and only have an www.alexa.com rank in the 60,000’s compared to relatively new sites like www.myartspace.com that are already in the lower 100,000. Kind of sad to think that a site that has been around as long as Artwanted will do doubt end up being passed by younger sites as far as traffic is concerned. Part of the problem is that their staff is anonymous. As a member you have no idea who you are dealing with. I’m always skeptical about a site that has no identity other than its name. Still, anything is better than www.deviantart.com. I can’t even totally delete my account on that site.
